Another pedestrian struck, this time fatally, near Phoenix

A pedestrian was killed in Glendale, Arizona after a vehicle struck the man -- who was somewhere in his 50s -- in the middle of the road. Not much is known about the accident, but in the meantime that is what officials will try to change. An investigation is under way.

Even without much information, the one aspect of the crash that is most important here is the location of the pedestrian when he crossed the street. He was not in the crosswalk, and thus his walk across the street is not granted the protections that accompany a legal crossing of a street.

Still, even when a pedestrian crosses the street in an illegal fashion, drivers are supposed to be aware enough and be able to react quickly enough to avoid a collision. Drivers are supposed to be constantly focused on the road because operating a motor vehicle is a privilege. If drivers don't do their best to focus on the road, accidents like this can happen and they can lose that privilege or have it restricted. In addition, they can come under legal fire in civil court.

With that said, all pedestrians need to show the respect too. Jaywalking is a very dangerous action, and all pedestrians should avoid it. Take the extra few moments to get to the corner, cross the street in the crosswalk, and then proceed with your day. That extra time spent making a safe trek across the street will spare you injury and prevent you from dealing with expensive medical bills.
