Serious injuries reported in Phoenix motorcycle accident

A motorcycle accident in Phoenix left the motorcyclist in critical condition at a local hospital after the rider suffered "serious" injuries. Witnesses said that the motorcyclist was flung at least 100 feet from his or her motorcycle. The wreck occurred at 7 a.m. and involved another vehicle, which apparently was leaving a private drive. Few other details have been released about this crash, but the police will look into the matter.

What will we learn in the coming weeks? Was the driver of the other vehicle negligent in any way? Was the motorcyclist unsafe? Were there some other factors involved with this crash that would explain how such a terrible motorcycle accident could occur?

One thing about motorcyclists that many people don't understand is that they are regular, everyday people. People who don't own, or like, or even understand motorcycles is that they assume people who own or like them must have some sort of death wish. They must want to drive down streets recklessly and at great speeds. They must enjoy breaking the rules and rebelling against societal norms.

These are all assumptions, and the truth is that most motorcyclists are average people who just enjoy riding on a motor bike. Death-defying acts and traveling at fast speeds have nothing to do with it.

This is important to mention because when motorcyclists are involved in an accident, the immediate assumption is that "they deserved it" or "they asked for it," with the subtext saying that somehow it was the motorcyclist's fault. Usually it isn't. They are severely injured because they travel in a vehicle that is inherently less safe than other motor vehicles. When these injuries are suffered at the hands of a reckless driver, they deserve justice just like anyone else.
