Pair of motorcycle wrecks in Phoenix leave at least 1 injured

A couple of weeks ago, a pair of motorcycle accidents snarled traffic on Interstate 17 in Phoenix. In one of the wrecks, the motorcyclist needed to be taken from the scene in an ambulance. That person's condition is not known. There are few details available about either crash, but it seems likely that the motorcyclist requiring hospitalization suffered serious injuries.

Until we know more about these motorcycle crashes, it is tough to determine fault. However, remember that motorcyclists are inherently more susceptible to injury than almost anyone else out on the road.

That may seem like a silly observation to make because it is so obvious. But so many people assume that a motorcyclist that is involved in a crash was reckless or negligent without hearing the facts. They assume that the motorcyclist was speeding or weaving in and out of traffic. These assumptions may feed their conclusion that the biker somehow "deserved" what he or she got.

But the fact of the matter is that most people who own motorcycles are not death-defying rebels who have beards and wear tough-looking leather jackets. They are just regular people like you -- the difference is they prefer to ride a motorcycle than drive a car.

Just because they are more susceptible to injury on a motorcycle doesn't mean they are inherently more dangerous than other people on the road. Drivers of other vehicles need to be on the lookout for motorcycles. When they fail to do this, they can make themselves liable for the damages and injuries the motorcyclist suffers.
