Pedestrian on phone hit, killed by car in Phoenix

A 45-year-old pedestrian was killed in Phoenix recently after he was hit by a car. The vehicle stayed at the scene as police investigated the accident. It is unclear if impairment was involved on the part of the driver. The police did say that the pedestrian may not be blameless in the crash. The police say there are indications that he was talking on his cellphone when he entered the road, and that he wasn't crossing the street in an area that had a crosswalk.

The 45-year-old was transported to a trauma center after the accident, but he died there overnight. There are few other details available about this wreck.

This brings up a couple of important reminders about public safety. The first is that cellphones and other distractions can affect more than just motor vehicle drivers. As we wrote last week, they can affect bicyclists and, unfortunately in this case, pedestrians. It's important for anyone who is driving in the road, biking in the road, or walking across the road to pay attention to his or her surroundings. A text or cellphone call is the last thing you should be worrying about as speeding vehicles zoom past you.

Still, drivers need to be on the lookout for pedestrians, whether those pedestrians are distracted or not, or crossing in the crosswalk or not. If the driver fails to uphold this responsibility, he or she can be held liable for the injuries or damages that are caused as a result of any potential collision.
