Bike accident leads to serious injuries for victim

An accident between a car and a bicycle in Phoenix, Arizona left one person with serious injuries, and even though the police did not identify who suffered the injuries, it is a very safe bet that the individual who suffered this harm is the bicyclist. All that we know at this point is that the sedan that was involved in the wreck has front end damage (including a broken windshield) and that the bicycle was launched several feet from the site of the accident.

The police aren't releasing any details about the wreck, which is understandable given that they want to go about their business with the investigation. So without much info, let's just have a discussion about how bicyclists can better protect themselves out on the road and implement strategies that could help them if the worst case scenario -- a collision with another vehicle -- were to happen.

First of all, wear safety gear. If you don't want to go all out with elbow pads, knee pads and wrist braces, that is your choice. But of all the pieces of equipment that you absolutely should wear, the helmet is the one. Whenever you are riding, wear a bike helmet.

Another thing you can do to help yourself is to wear a video camera of some kind. It could be a mounted camera on your helmet, or a camera that is attached to the front of your bike. Recording your bike trips is helpful because any accident that occurs will likely be caught on camera, and the video evidence can provide crucial details that support any legal action that the biker makes.
