On bike safety and the number of accidents that happen every year

Back in 2001, there were 732 fatalities in bike vs. motor vehicle accidents in the United States. Over the next decade, safety measures were implemented to help protect the biking community. And yet in 2012, there were 726 fatalities in bike vs. motor vehicle accidents in the U.S. It seems as though our advancements in safety protocols and laws haven't helped keep bikers safe on the road, and we're entering another period of questions as to how to keep our roads safe for those who want to ride their bikes.

Consider also that the number of injuries related to bike accidents in the U.S. routinely hovers around 50,000 per year. There is a clear need to make biking safer, and there's no question about the obvious and inherent safety threat that is posed to bikers: they are in open vehicles with basically no protection. Being struck by a car while on a bike is almost guaranteed to result in serious injuries for the biker.

A large portion of bike accidents involve a motor vehicle striking them. According to a survey in 2012, 29 percent of injuries garnered in bike accidents were caused by a motor vehicle striking the biker. We just can't have this. Drivers: please be aware of bikers and proceed safely near them. And bikers: do everything you can to stay safe out on the road.

This may include some unorthodox-sounding techniques. For example, you could strap a video camera to your bike to record your rides. Then, if something were to happen to you during your ride, it may be caught on camera. That could provide you with some very helpful evidence should you proceed with a civil lawsuit against someone for hitting you.
