Accidents involving injuries, deaths way up in first half of 2015

A new report from the National Safety Council is filled with bad news, even though there is some silver lining to the report. The NSC looked at traffic accidents for the first half of 2015, and what the agency found is an alarming rise in injury accidents and fatal accidents. At the current pace, 2015 will be one of the worst years in a decade for road accidents.

The report found that road related deaths had increased 14 percent in the first half of 2015, and road related injury accidents jumped by about one-third. What's disconcerting about these increases (besides the fact that they exist) is that the total number of miles traveled by drivers in the first half of 2015 has only increased by 3.4 percent. So why the sudden jump in these accidents?

Officials are blaming a combination of increased speed limits in some areas and cellphone use. Some estimate that one in every four accidents this spring involved a driver that was distracted by a mobile device in some way.

We mentioned a silver lining: drunk driving accidents have decreased 20 percent during the first half of the year. In addition, seat belt use is on the rise and teen deaths in accidents have dropped.

Still, this report is very telling. Our roads are becoming more dangerous, may it be due to cellphone use, speed limit changes, a combination of the two, or myriad other possible factors that could contribute to a rising accident rate. That means more people are suffering and are in need of legal help to sort out their motor vehicle accident. If you are injured in an accident, don't hesitate. You need to consult with an experienced personal injury attorney to protect yourself and your interests.
