Let's talk about truck drivers and the trucking industry

Truck accidents are a major topic of road safety, and they always will be. Inherent to the equation is a big, powerful motor vehicle that is capable of towing many tons of dangerous materials. These vehicles can crash, tip over and explode. And there is no real way to guarantee that zero truck accidents will happen. Mistakes are a part of life -- and truck drivers will make mistakes every now and then.

About $7.5 billion dollars are spent every year by the trucking industry for vehicle safety. They educate and train their drivers to be safe. But that doesn't guarantee that every driver will absorb that training, nor does it mean that the vehicle won't fail in some way. It also doesn't mean that the truck driver is immune to fatigue. If drivers don't get enough sleep between shifts, then they run afoul of the law and they could get into an accident.

We bring this up more as a topic of conversation than as something that needs to be highlighted due to a lack of recognition. People know that the trucks can be dangerous and that the trucking industry has some problems. Then again, what industry doesn't?

More to the point: you can have good truck drivers and you can have bad truck drivers. The source for this point mentioned a truck driver who has been working for 27 years without an accident. With over two million miles driven, that is amazing. On the other side of the coin, there are surely truck drivers out there who have accidents on their record and probably seem rather negligent.
