Arizona could be headed for a texting ban after new rule proposed

Arizona is one of the few remaining states in the U.S. that does not have some sort of ban on texting or cellphone use while driving a car. That may change if a state representative from Tucson has her way, as she proposed a state-wide ban on sending or composing a text while driving. According to the state representative, the proposed law would not apply to drivers who use hands-free technology to send or compose a text.

The inspiration for the law came from the November truck accident that claimed the life of a police officer. The truck driver is accused of looking at his cell phone while driving -- and going so far as to block the dash-mounted camera with his wallet so what he was doing. However, footage during the crash shows the driver's cell phone flying around the cab.

That Arizona accident became a national story, and it sparked new outrage over the distracted driving debate. The act itself is purely negligent, and it is so illogical to look away from the road to focus on a tiny screen that it's amazing that anyone even does it. You travel so far in your car in just a few seconds -- anything could happen during that time or distance that would make it impossible for a distracted driver to react to the flow of traffic.

The proposed law would make sending or composing a text in Arizona a civil traffic violation, and the offending driver would be given a $200 fine.
