Car, bike collide in Scottsdale; biker killed in wreck

Scottsdale was the scene yet again for a bike accident. This time, though, the biker wasn't lucky enough to survive the crash and file a civil lawsuit like the last biker from Scottsdale we wrote about.

The biker in this case was a 71-year-old man who was riding his bicycle around 5:30 last Friday evening. A 4-door vehicle then struck him and left the scene. Apparently the biker "drifted" into traffic and was not wearing a helmet, though the former still needs to be confirmed. Investigators are looking into the crash. After the wreck, the older gentleman was taken to a hospital, but he did not survive.

Before we go any further, we have to talk about the fact that this biker was riding without a helmet. There is simply no reason to do this. We know, Phoenix-area bikers: the helmets may be unseemly and uncomfortable. But that is such a small price to pay for a critical piece of safety equipment that could literally save your life.

Now, with that bit of patronizing out of the way, let's discuss the irresponsible, and possibly reckless, driver who decided to flee the scene of the accident.

The driver's act is clearly illegal, but it could also point to unsafe driving. Maybe he or she was swerving in and out of the lane, causing the crash, and that's why they left the accident scene. Too often this happens between cars and bikes, and the resulting wreck is labeled an "accident" where few citations, if any, are handed out. That cheapens the nature of these accidents and puts the bicyclist in a tough position if they want to pursue civil action.
