Another day, another bike accident that unfortunately deals serious injuries to an unsuspecting and innocent biker. This wreck occurred in Tucson, Arizona, where a biker was in the designated bike lane when he was hit from behind by a car. The driver of the motor vehicle stayed at the scene and talked with police after the crash. No charges were filed as far as we can tell. The biker was dealt “serious but not life-threatening” injuries in the wreck.
What is interesting about the aftermath of this accident is state politicians answered questions about potential legislation regarding public safety and distracted driving. Did distracted driving have anything to do with this wreck? Was the driver talking on the phone or looking down at a cellphone while driving?
Even if the driver was not distracted by a cellphone in some form, this is still a terrible accident that serves as a reminder to motor vehicle drivers to be cautious around bikers and give them the space to which they have a right. The bike lane is a protected space that every vehicle needs to avoid. Even if there is no bike lane on the particular street you are driving on, you should still give bikes the space they deserve.
More specific information about the bike accident in question here will be released in the coming days and weeks. We can only hope that the biker will fully recover from this — and for the sake of the driver, that no distracted driving played a role in his actions.
