How many pedestrians are injured every year?

It goes without saying that pedestrians are inherently more likely to be injured or killed in an accident than people in a car or motor vehicle. Pedestrians are virtually unprotected and have no safety equipment of any kind to help them with the impact of such an accident.

This is why drivers of motor vehicles need to be especially cautious at intersections, and why they need to keep an observant eye out for pedestrians. It also highlights the need for pedestrians to stay in the crosswalks and not jaywalk. Everyone needs to do their part to limit the number of pedestrian accidents that occur.

Speaking of which, how many pedestrians do you think are injured or killed every year as a result of accidents? According to a report, in 2010, about 70,000 pedestrians were injured in accidents and 4,280 were killed in the United States. This breaks down to these amazing rates:

  • One pedestrian dies approximately every two hours in the U.S.
  • One pedestrian is injured approximately every eight minutes in the U.S.

Obviously we have a bit of a pedestrian safety problem here in the U.S., and even though these accidents may never truly be eliminated, we can certainly do our part to reduce their frequency. In addition to some of the suggestions made above, pedestrians can also wear brighter or more reflective clothing at night, thus making them more noticeable and visible to drivers. Also, drivers need to communicate with pedestrians better, may it be by hand signals or through actual verbal communication.
