Red light runner crashes into vehicle driven by 17-year-old

A car accident in Phoenix last week left a 78-year-old woman and a 17-year-old girl with trips to the hospital. The wreck occurred near a high school, where the 17-year-old was just leaving from after a swimming competition. The 78-year-old woman was driving her vehicle but ran a red light, and as the 17-year-old pulled out of the high school, she was struck by the elderly woman's vehicle.

The crash dealt severe damage to the 17-year-old's vehicle, and she had to be extricated from her vehicle by emergency responders. She suffered serious injuries, but she is also expected to survive and be okay. The older woman was able to get out of her vehicle after the wreck, but emergency responders soon took her to the hospital after it was determined she had suffered serious injuries as well. She is also expected to be okay.

Obviously there is negligence and recklessness at play here, what with the 78-year-old running a red light and all. But the other question here is how much time elapsed between the red light and the actual collision. Was the school parking lot entrance right at the intersection? Or did the 78-year-old drive for a few seconds after the red light, only to eventually collide with the 17-year-old?

All of the facts and details will be revealed once the police complete their investigation of the crash. In the meantime, the 17-year-old and her family will likely consider some form of legal action against the older woman for her reckless driving behavior.
