Texting while driving is an incredibly dangerous act

According to some data from a recent distracted driving crackdown by the Arizona Department of Public Safety, texting while driving is not one of the major causes of a distracted driver. However, general cellphone use is the top cause for distracted driving, and it appears that the younger crowds -- people aged 21-30 -- are the most susceptible to allowing their cellphone to get the better of them while in the driver's seat.

What is interesting about this data is the way it is being interpreted. Our source article seems to think this data shows that texting while driving really isn't that big of a deal. Whether it is prevalent or not -- and it appears it is the latter -- texting while driving is still a very dangerous driving activity, one that could change lives or end them altogether. Just because it happens less frequently than you would think doesn't mean the issue should just be dismissed.

When a driver actively chooses to take out his or her cellphone -- and thus chooses to take his or her focus off of the road and onto something that could wait -- they are engaging in a negligent act. Any negative consequences from that negligent act then fall on their shoulders. They would be liable for any accident that they caused, and any injuries that the victims of the accident suffered.

Texting while driving is dangerous, and it does not matter how frequent or infrequent it occurs. Don't text and drive.
