2nd life claimed in car-bicycle accident

A second bicyclist has died from a collision with a motor vehicle in Arizona. The wreck, which occurred on State Route 95, involved two bicyclists and a Lincoln car. The driver of the Lincoln, a 31-year-old woman, was not charged with any criminal activity as no nefarious action or intoxicated or distracted driving was found. However, she was driving at a speed that was "unreasonable" to prevent a crash.

One of the cyclists was killed at the scene, while the other cyclist was taken to a hospital to receive treatment. He unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

Many people remembered the cycling pair, who were married, and commended them for their incredible dedication to the biking community and a healthy and sporting lifestyle.

Possibly the most upsetting and disappointing element to this story is the fact that this isn't some crazy accident that will never be duplicated. To the contrary, this is an accident that happens all the time. It is far too simple of an accident -- and far too easy of an accident -- to occur. Bikers are at risk every time they set wheels to pavement, and it doesn't even require a driver to act maliciously or outrageously negligent.

For all we know, the 31-year-old woman was just driving a little bit over the speed limit. She could be a very good and hardworking person. And yet, one moment in time -- one unfortunate meeting of motor vehicle and bicycle -- and many lives are changed. It's just a frustrating reality, and both drivers and bikers need to do everything can to operate safely around one another.
