Driver flees from scene of fatal bike accident, search is ongoing

Though the following accident may not have occurred here in Arizona -- or even the United States -- it still serves as a cold and stark reminder that bike safety is not even close to where it should be. The wreck we are referencing occurred in Canada, and it involves an unknown vehicle and a bicycle.

The crash happened in the early morning hours when practically no one was out on the road. The biker, in his 30s, was riding along the road when a vehicle struck him. The biker suffered horrific injuries, and despite the best efforts of medical personnel, he could not be saved. The vehicle that struck the bicyclist cowardly fled the scene, and a community-wide search is underway to find the culprit. The police have also launched an investigation into the fatal wreck.

There are a couple of factors to consider here, and the first is the fact that this wreck is a hit-and-run. Hit-and-run drivers aren't always caught, but many of them are. When they face the music, it is possible for the individual to not only face criminal charges for the wreck and for fleeing the scene, but to face a civil lawsuit as well.

The other obvious factor here is that a bike was involved in a fatal crash yet again. Bicyclists are in an incredibly dangerous situation by their very nature. Bikes don't offer much, if any, protection, and when they are struck by larger, much more powerful vehicles, the results are often catastrophic.

Drivers of other vehicles need to keep their eyes open for bikers, and when they are around a biker, that have to be especially cautious with how they handle and operate their vehicle. Negligent or reckless driving around a biker could cause a wreck, one that the driver would likely be held responsible for.
