Study points to slow reaction times for older drivers

The following study comes from the United Kingdom, but that doesn't make it any less important here in the United States.

The study looked at older drivers -- namely people over the age of 65 -- and how they reacted to changes in traffic while they were distracted. In general, the study found that older drivers are less secure when they drive, and they are three times as slow to react to things than someone between the ages of 18 and 30. This may not exactly be a surprising revelation about older drivers when compared to younger drivers, but it still drives home an important point: the older we get, the more difficult it will be for us to drive.

This is a controversial topic in many respects. We're talking about the dangers inherent to driving when you are an older person, and that conversation naturally leads to a certain discussion: should older people be allowed to drive, or should they be subject to harsher rules for maintaining their driver's license?

The answer to that question depends on a lot of things, and there may not be a perfect solution. But what is clear is that we will all reach this point in our lives. We will react slower; we will all struggle to understand signs or situations that we used to handle without any trouble; and we will all need to make the decision whether we should be out on the road anymore. Driving is indeed a privilege, and driving in a manner that warrants the removal of that privilege can also open you up to civil liability.
