Be very careful when using social media during a divorce

When it comes to social media and divorce, there's only one rule to live by if you want to eliminate any risks: don't use social media during a divorce. It is the only way to truly protect yourself from the dangers of social media while you and your spouse are calling it quits.

We bring this up because social media is a fundamental part of our world now. We use it to interact with friends, with companies, with our employers and with celebrities. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and many, many more social media services are huge parts of our lives now. So when someone is served with divorce papers, it is only natural that they would want to take to social media about this life-changing moment.

However, using social media during divorce is very tricky. If you say the wrong thing, it could be used by your soon-to-be-ex against you. If you send a private message to someone that contains some unfortunate information, it could be used against you. If you post photos or "like" certain posts online, it could come back to haunt you. Even deleting old information could lead to problems, as those acts can be detected and utilized by your spouse's attorney.

With all of that said, we realize that using social media is fairly important for many people. We urge you to stay off of social media if you are going through a divorce -- but if you must access Twitter, Facebook or any other social media platform during a divorce, be very careful of what you post and what information you access.
