A few ways to minimize risk of social media use during divorce

A few weeks ago, we wrote about social media and divorce. This is a very touchy subject, because while it is incredibly important and though it does pose a risk to many people, ultimately social media is a tool that has become an integral part of the world. In that post from a few weeks ago, we weren't exactly specific when it came to strategies or alternative approaches to social media if you are going through a divorce.

It's time to remedy that. Today, we're going to talk about what you should do if you truly, absolutely, no-questions-asked MUST use social media during a divorce:

  • The first tip is a fairly obvious one: you shouldn't talk about your divorce or your spouse on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any social media account. Nothing good can come of it. Your words, even if well intended, could be misconstrued or taken out of context.
  • If you have children, then the same rule applies. Don't mention them or your divorce, because that could cause a lot of legal issues if custody is contested. Even if it isn't contested, it could lead to problems.
  • Should you find yourself thinking "maybe I should avoid social media, but I need an outlet for my feelings!" then you should talk to your friends in person, seek counseling or a divorce coach, or even keep a journal. All of these activities can give you the emotional release that you need while eliminating the risk inherent to blasting your feelings out to everyone online.
