Probate: why is this process so intimidating?

Probate is a process that everyone estate goes through. But what most people try to do is limit their loved ones experience in probate by establishing trusts to shield certain assets from the probate process, or by clearly defining how they want their assets to be divvied up when they pass away. Without a will, the probate process will proceed under basic rules and procedures, thus reducing the chances of a timely and cost-efficient process.

Avoiding the intestate label: why wills are so important

Imagine for a moment that you never put together an estate plan and, as such, you never compose a will. Years and years pass -- you move from your younger years, the 20s and 30s, to your older years of the 60s and 70s. All the while you are gathering assets, building a family, and generally trying to amass a nest egg that you could pass on to your children. But alas, you forgot about that estate plan. And when you pass away, your estate is "intestate" and your last wishes are not followed because they were never made clear.

Financial tips for those going through divorce

Many people have a scripted idea in their head when they think of divorce. They think that the splitting spouses are so upset with each other that negotiation is impossible, litigation is inevitable and that there's no way the process can be completed in a civilized, efficient manner. While small bits of this idea may be somewhat true, most of that divorce stereotype is false.
