Some things to do (and avoid) during divorce

When you and your spouse are going through a divorce, everything in your life will feel more complicated. Even though you know what you’re doing is for the best, it can still turn your life upside-down. However, there are some concrete steps you can take — and some unfortunate actions to avoid — that will make the whole process simpler and more efficient.

So if you are going through a divorce (or if you are startling to contemplate divorce), remember some of these tips to help make the whole process a more successful split:

  • No matter how amicable your split is with your spouse, the two of you are unlikely agree on everything. For those topics that you don’t agree on, remember to be cordial and respectful in your discussions, and be prepared to negotiate. Getting angry and unwilling to accept potential solutions will only make things worse.
  • Avoid making any major life decisions (aside from this divorce) during your split. For example, you shouldn’t take a job in another state. You should avoid getting married to someone else.
  • Your children, if you have any, are very important to both of you. During the divorce, support them in any way you can. Also, respect any custody arrangements that are made, even if you don’t agree with them. Infringing upon the custody arrangement could lead to some serious penalties.
  • Get an attorney so that you questions can be answers and to ensure that you are adequately represented during this incredibly important time in your life.
